In researching the online collection of The Ringling

Khmer Art Overseas: In researching the online collection of The Ringling, the former John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, USA, there were no results for Khmer art. However, that was not the story when Dr Helga Wall-Apelt, founder of Sarasota's Museum of Asian Art, gifted her eclectic collection of Chinese jade, bronze sculptures and ancient Cambodian stone figures, alongside a substantial monetary sum of over $6 million to fund a new wing of the museum in 2006. Problems set in and Wall-Apelt filed suit against the museum for tardiness and withdrew her 1,700 pieces of Asian art from the museum, before the Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Gallery of Asian Art finally opened in 2016, surprisingly still bearing her name, at The Ringling. As for her private collection, much of it went to sale via James D Julia auctioneers in March 2015, including more than a dozen Khmer antiquities, as shown here. Obviously, the auction house was unaware of the original provenance of some of the artifacts, calling them either Japanese, Chinese, Burmese or Indian. The sale raised just under $2 million for the collector, Dr Wall-Apelt.Credit by: Mr Andy Brouwer
